Still think Obama is all that Faith?

Gay marriage equals incest and pedophilia. Abortion equals the Holocaust. Or so thinks “America’s Pastor Rick “Saddleback” Warren, bestselling author of The Purpose-Driven Life, vocal supporter of Proposition 8 , and the spiritual leader chosen by President-elect Obama to give the invocation at his inauguration. But hey — don’t call him a homophobe: He even eats dinner with gays.

Hmm, I have some problems with President Elect being sworn in by a man who holds these ideologies. Ah well, life is full of quandries.

  1. I’ve never said all what I think he is. I’m for sure disappointed in this choice, although to me it points to a bigger problem with the inauguration being a religious ceremony at all (but it always has been…I actually wrote a paper at Brock about religion and inaugural addresses). If he “had” to choose someone, who’s it going to be? Wright? Jesse Jackson? Quandry is right.
In the posting you linked to, columnist David Broder said this:
“Pro-life pastor Rick Warren will give the invocation at President-Elect Barack Obama’s inauguration. It makes a whole lot of sense. Even though Warren and Obama disagree on the life issue, they do see eye to eye on many social justice issues. This move is also classic Obama because it is a signal to religious conservatives that he’s willing to bring in both sides to the faith discussion in this country. Obama has never shied away from that.”
I don’t know that I completely agree…but it’s another perspective. I think there are some pluses to go along with the minuses of the Warren decision. We English majors should understand the subtleties of agreeing with someone on some things and not on lots of others. It’s not the most significant, or insignificant decision…but I’ve always been interested in seeing what happens with Obama, and don’t think I’ll withhold judgment as we go along.

  2. The Warren discussion has gone on on the XXFactor blog; they’re also discussing an article on the same topic by Christopher Hitchens that I offended some people by linking to.
